If you’re like me, when I hear the words ‘New Year’s Resolution’ I immediately think about hitting the gym or eating healthier. But as business managers, a carefully curated list of ‘leadership resolutions’ can go a long way towards making the new year more prosperous for your company and your employees.
Here’s the trick though. Make your resolutions count. If you’re going to make the effort, make it meaningful and stick to it. It’s a year-long marathon – not a one-month sprint. So dig-in and commit to seeing it through.
Need some help getting started? You may find of more of these leadership resolutions below relatable – and worth pursuing:
> Pay more attention to marketing and networking. Having a marketing plan is a must for every small business. Create one or hire an expert to do it for you. Renewing your focus on networking can also revitalize your business.
> Don’t settle for just ‘getting by’. Address the aspects of your business that are barely adequate and hold you back at times. Commit to getting rid of these problems and improving your potential.
> Delegate more and do it better. Small business leaders tend to feel that they need to do everything themselves. This way, they fail to scale up their businesses, missing opportunities and getting bogged down in menial tasks.
> Encourage positive mental health habits. Maintain a safe, respectful, and collaborative work environment. Designate “relationship managers” that employees can confide in, foster inclusion, and encourage creation and sharing of new ideas.
> Make sure your people use all of their allotted vacation time. Speaking of mental health, work-life balance is extremely important. People (especially high achievers) will often overlook taking their allotted time off. It is part of the leadership role to help your people take care of themselves.
> Encourage your team to take time to contribute to something outside of work. It may be a charity, nonprofit, community organization, or a youth sports team—wherever their interests lie. When they take pride in contributing to society, it will reflect on their work in a positive manner.
> Remind yourself constantly that it is not about you. Business managers think about how their decisions will affect them. Business leaders focus on their people, and when their people are happy, productive and successful, the success of that leader takes care of itself.
Once your leadership resolutions are identified, commit to them - and begin taking meaningful action. You may end up making 2023 your best year yet.
